🇬🇾 Guyana Inaugurates Strategic Highway with Indian Support; Roraima TV Joins the Celebration
A major milestone in Guyana’s development was reached with the official inauguration of the Ogle–Eccles four-lane highway, a 7.8-kilometer road connecting the East Coast and East Bank corridors. The project, funded by a US $50 million concessional line of credit from the Government of India, was built by Ashoka Buildcon and RITES Limited, two major Indian infrastructure companies.
The final cost of the project reached US $133.8 million, due to expanded features including drainage systems, upgraded embankments, LED lighting, surveillance cameras, and digital signage foundations.

Roraima TV from Brazil Attends the Historic Event
Representing Brazil, Roraima TV, the largest communication complex in the state of Roraima, was officially present at the inauguration ceremony. The network’s founder and CEO, Mr. Rychard Santos, traveled from Boa Vista to witness the historic moment firsthand.
“It was a true honor to attend this event. We came from Brazil to witness this historic achievement and thank President Irfaan Ali for the opportunity to participate. Roraima TV proudly covers this moment as part of our mission to strengthen ties between Brazil and Guyana,” said Mr. Santos.

Faster Commute, Greater Opportunity
According to President Dr. Irfaan Ali, the new highway will reduce travel time between Ogle and Eccles from up to 45 minutes to just 12 to 15 minutes. He called the project a “Corridor of Opportunity”, citing billions of dollars expected in private sector investments surrounding the new route.
The road directly links the East Coast Highway (Rupert Craig Highway) with the East Bank corridor, providing new land access while relieving congestion in Georgetown.

India–Guyana Friendship Drives the Project
Nearly 46% of the total project cost was covered by India’s EXIM Bank, reinforcing diplomatic and development ties between both nations. According to Guyana’s Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, the collaboration resulted in high quality work with lower spending:
“We are spending less and delivering more,” he affirmed.
The project showcases India’s expanding role in South American development, especially in strategic sectors like transportation and infrastructure.

High-Tech Construction Over Swampland
Given the swampy terrain, the road required advanced engineering including vertical drains, geotextile fabric stabilization, and elevated embankments. The highway is equipped with LED lighting, security systems, future-ready digital signage bases, and integration points with the upcoming Demerara River Bridge.

Next Phases Underway
The next section of the highway, from Eccles to Providence, is already under construction, with a US $67 million contract awarded to Ashoka Buildcon. This segment will connect to the Demerara bridge and integrate with other national road arteries, expanding mobility throughout Guyana.
